There is always a better, fancier thing out there, something that promises to make you happy once you buy it. In photography there is a similar false promise. Companies would have people believe that if they buy a certain lens or new accessory all of their dreams will come true, that magically their business will take off. Remarkably though this temptation is  a hard one to resist. It’s so prevalent in our industry that people have created an acronym for it. See here and here. Gear Acquisition Syndrome is the temptation to buy photography gear incessantly, always on the search for the piece of gear that will take a photographer’s work to the next level. It’s a false promise though, one I have done my best to avoid.

I’ll be honest, I don’t have the best camera on the market. I don’t have a lense for every single focal length. What I do have is the ability to tell stories beautifully with the gear I own. As time goes on I’ll add new tools to my kit but only once I have pushed my current gear to its full limit. Until then growth and stories remain my full focus, not the tools I tell them with.
